Alumni Carl Junot honored (4/08):
*CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -* Carl Junot has joined the Harvard men’s soccer staff as an assistant coach, James Welch head coach of Harvard men’s soccer, announced Monday. Junot previously served as an assistant coach at New Mexico for six seasons, including five years on the Lobo sidelines as a full-time assistant. In addition to his coaching duties, Junot served as the assistant director of the Lobo Soccer Academy. He was also the director of the Olympic development program at New Mexico from 2005-06. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Carl Junot join the Crimson program,” Clark said.
“Carl is one of the country's top assistants and was a catalyst in transforming New Mexico into a national powerhouse. “We worked together for four years at New Mexico, so I know what a great addition Carl will be to Harvard men’s soccer,” Clark continued. “He is a brilliant coach, proven recruiter and will help keep this program moving in a positive direction. “I am very excited to work at Harvard University,” Junot said. “Harvard is a dynamic institution with a great tradition of men's soccer.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Junot played his college soccer for the highly ranked Furman Paladins. Junot led the Paladins to three Southern Conference Championships in his four seasons. During his junior season, Junot guided the Paladins to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. He made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament as team captain during his senior season. Following his senior year he was named to the All-Southern Conference and All-Southern Region teams as well as being named team MVP. He was also invited to take part in the MLS Combine in 2001. Junot earned his bachelor’s degree from Furman in 2001 and later received his master’s in sports administration from New Mexico in 2007. His wife, Brigid, is a native of Melbourne, Australia.
Carl reflects upon his youth soccer experience, "I am extremely excited about what the Hammers organization is doing and what to express my gratitude for what San Antonio soccer and Thomas Woolley have done for me throughout my formative years in soccer. As member of the Hammers club I was given an opportunity to grow as a player and express my individual ability as a player. The idea of enjoying soccer has not been forgotten in Woolley's teaching while still emphasizing the commitment to team and personal success. The competitive exposure I received as a youth player allowed me to reach my goals of joining a collegiate soccer team and eventually gaining exposure to professional soccer. From humble beginnings in San Antonio, education and soccer have allowed me to pursue a lifetime of soccer involvement."
